 ABOUT THE MUSEUM

Fort Assiniboine has a very important place in the history of Alberta. The location is mentioned in early historical records dating back to the 1700s. During the Hudson Bay Era (1823-1877), the site was named Fort Assiniboine presumably after the Assiniboine Indians, and was used as a supply and transportation point. Fort Assiniboine was also registered as the second oldest fort in Alberta.

To commemorate its early history, a Hudson's Bay-style historical museum was erected in 1980 in the community. The museum reflects the fur trading times and includes historic artifacts from the area. The buildings are now referred to as the Fort Assiniboine Museum and Friendship Club Drop-in Centre. The centre is located on State Ave. (Main Street) in Fort Assiniboine.
